I have always planned to bring back this website. But I put it on the back burner as Life required my attention elsewhere. Doesn’t mean that they have died down, but I find that things have called from me to return. I return a little older, hopefully a little wiser, and flying a little less by the seat of my pants.
It is my hope that this will be the start of many more Blogs, on many subjects. So please be patient. Writing is my favorite pastime, and requires a lot of work before I show you the finished product.
So, as I said, I always planned to bring the site back. I just never figured it would be around a situation like this or for a reason like this.
If you’ve seen my Bone Reading Video last month (Jan and Feb) then you know I said, I would be attending the Pagan Convention, Pantheacon. While there, events took place, and I found myself among those at the center of a situation involving Racism ( I capitalize, because when this word is used it isn’t something small or simple, but something big, and we’ll come back to why this is big later on), and trying to manage it for everyone’s benefit and healing
I’d be lying to you by saying that it didn’t affect or traumatize me. One can never go through events of this nature and not be changed in some way by them. A number of people have written Blogs about what was said, how they felt, how to address it for future Pantheons, and the state of Pagan politics and beliefs around the subject of Racism, Safety, and diversity. All of whom have much to teach all who read their words. I won’t add to what they are already doing, a fine job at that. 🙂
So what I am, going to talk about is this subject (Racism/Homophobia/Transphobia/Sexism) that has troubled humans since we first saw a different human cross the field from us. A subject that has been a fulcrum to launch both exploration and wars of religion and greed.
There was subject that I heard little discussion of during these events: namely, the subject of Magic & Spirituality, more specifically Shadow Work. A subject that many an author of psychotherapy and/or pagan literature has touched on in the overall discussion of therapy, spiritual development, and being a better human being.
One of my fellow attendees calls on many Pagans of Color (Poc’s) to use magic to address these problems. This includes Pagan of LGBT (PofLGBT). And I don’t see why not. Lets’, use Magic to help change and address Racism/Homophobia/Transphobia/Sexism. But let us use it responsibly and not vengefully. Because that will just create more problems. To do that work successfully we all ( I mean everyone of any ethnic, spiritual, or gender background), need to do our Shadow Work on these subjects.
Shadow Work, in quick terms, is the unconscious aspect of one’s ego that one doesn’t identify itself. As such is easier to identify it as something outside of one’s self. Now often this is talked about in personal terms. But the truth of the matter is that it is also a social condition. So Social/Community Shadow Work has to happen at the same time as personal Shadow Work — work to address the shadows of Racism/Homophobia/Transphobia/Sexism that have been coming into view these last few years, not just in society at large, but equally in the Pagan societies. Many traditions have Shadow Work as part of their practices. If yours doesn’t, its time to explore adding it and seeing how you grow from it. Time to apply those practices to this.
As people who practice Magic and Spiritual development as a way of life, it should come as little surprise that this is part of the Shadow Work process. The factor is that Shadow Work never stops, it gets deeper and harder. So congrats on reaching a new level in your work. But don’t think you can say “ I don’t want to work on this, or I’ll work on it later”. If you’re feeling trouble, pain, anger, or depression it is because you need to work on this. The Universe/Creator of All things/ Goddess/Gods or whatever guiding force is the teacher with the lesson plan, and it’s up. You might do everything you can to ignore it, but it will keep coming back till you do the lesson.
Guess what? If you look around, the subjects Racism/Homophobia/Transphobia/Sexism. Are coming up a lot more than they used to. That’s because the Shadow Work wasn’t done, and it’s time to revisit the lesson. The lesson will appear less often or not at all when it can be shown that it has been learned.
Now how should you, dear reader, begin your Shadow Work on this lesson set? I can’t tell you. So I’ll suggest this, how did you begin your last lesson? How can you do the same now? Perhaps you might begin by talking with and getting to know someone who is a PoC, PoLGBT or someone who is an Ally.
Why these options, Racism/Homophobia/Transphobia/Sexism work by dehumanizing both joy and pain in humans. Every PoC, PoLGBT has stories of joy and pain that needs to recognized, seen, and accepted without judgement by another human being. Allies have been doing their Shadow Work. PoC’s & PoLGBT, understand who you are angry at, and why. Understand why that Ally is so willing to stand with you and don’t throw that away. Need I say more… your Shadow work is calling……
